Google PageRank

What is Google's PageRank?

PageRank or PR is a method created by Google to estimate how important a web page is. The importance is estimated based on the number of links from other sites. The incoming links are further rated based on the importance of the linking site.

PageRank is represented by a number between 0 and 10. Each page within a website is assigned a PageRank.

Sharing PageRank With Other Pages

Web pages can link to other pages and thus vote on their importance. Depending on the value of its PageRank, a web page can vote for other pages either from its own site or others. The voting power of the page will be divided between the outgoing links on the page. For example, a PR4 page that has 2 external links and 2 internal links will share approximately 1 point of PageRank between the 4 pages.

The Google Toolbar

The easiest way of find out a page's PR is to download Google's toolbar. After installing the toolbar you will be able to see the PR value of any page you browse. The important thing to note about the toolbar PR is that Google does not update the displayed PR very often. The toolbar PR value is only updated every 3-4 months while the PR used to calculate search rankings is updated more often.
